The composition was based on an analysis of a specific building \u2013 the music department at the Stranmillis College in Belfast. Designed in 1968 (H. Wightman) it is a remarkable piece of architecture, both placeless (its UFO-like shape so reinforces) and beautifully integrated in the landscape. To help articulate the different ways the building can inform the composition, I based each part on three different works by three Polish artists whose work has been fascinating me.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-310\" src=\"https:\/\/diogoalvim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Music-Department-300x198.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diogoalvim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Music-Department-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/diogoalvim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Music-Department-768x506.png 768w, https:\/\/diogoalvim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Music-Department.png 933w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Part 1<\/b>\u00a0uses elements from the material found in Penderecki\u2019s second string quartet (1968) to articulate a wide range of musical textures and timbres, through peculiar symbols and wobbly lines. It is my subjective sonification of the building, at once formal, conceptual,\u00a0 phenomenological.
